The Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. It is fed by the Tonle Sap River which is unique in that its direction of flow changes at different times of the year. This tour takes you on a circuit of the lake, beginning in Siem Reap, where we will show you the highlights of the Angkor temples Angkor Asia Guide style – without the crowds. We continue to Battambang with its crumbling colonial architecture and fun Bamboo Train and end in Cambodia’s bustling capital, Phnom Penh. From Angkor Wat to emerald rice fields, jungle-clad Beng Mealea temple to busy markets this tour offers an in-depth look at life around the Tonle Sap.

Day 1:

Arrive in Angkor Siem Reap international airport where you will be met by your expert our tour guide and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon enjoy your first taste of Angkor with a visit to Banteay Kdei temple followed by sunset view on the top of Pre Rup temple, one of the most famous sunset temples at Angkor complex.

Day 2:

A single, magical day at the temples following our well researched crowd avoidance itinerary, including Ta Prohm of ‘Tomb Raider’ fame, the forest to lightly visit of Ta Nei, Mountain temple of Ta Keo known as the ” Bronze Peaks” admire its five-tired pyramid structure, Angkor Thom: Terrace of the Elephants, Terrace of the Leper King, Preah Palilay, Phimeanakas, Baphuon, and the Bayon with its captivating stone faces. After enjoy a wonderful hotel breakfast.

Day 3:

Take a private boat onto the Tonle Sap lake, the richest freshwater fishing ground in the world, to visit one of the authentic stilted villages (either Kompong Kleang or Kompong Phluk depending on water levels). A picnic lunch is included. In the afternoon head into the countryside to jungle-clad Beng Mealea temple which, in a much collapsed state, retains a very atmospheric feel.

Day 4:

Motor through the pre-dawn darkness to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat as we guide you to the best photo vantage points. Explore in the hours immediately after sunrise when the temple is at its quietest. This afternoon take a journey of discovery by ox-cart and on foot to visit villages little changed since the days of Jayavarman VII. End the day with coconut water at Angkor Asia Guide´s country house and after overlook a colorful contemporary pagoda to understand more of importance Buddhism in these rural communities and seek a Water Blessing ceremony by monk said to bring good fortune for journey ahead.

Day 5:

Cruise by boat across the great Tonle Sap and up the Sangker River to Battambang, the centre of agriculture in Cambodia’s fertile southwest. There is an opportunity to stop at several places along the way as we pass floating and stilted villages, including the Prek Toal bird sanctuary and island wats.

Day 6:

In the morning explore some of the local markets and the French Colonial architecture around Battambang town, before a ride on the famous bamboo train. This afternoon visit Wat Ek Phnom with its 30m tall white Buddha and see how fish paste and rice paper are made.

Day 7:

Explore the villages, markets and rural scenery along National Road No 5 by private car on your journey to Phnom Penh. Your driver will stop at your request at some of the villages and towns producing traditional and modern Khmer crafts, including the famous marble work of Pursat, and the ceramics of Kompong Chhnang.

Day 8:

Weaving through Phnom Penh’s colourful streets, explore some of our favorite hidden gems by traditional transportation method: the cyclo. In the afternoon take in the shimmering spires of the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda.

Day 9:

This morning we endeavor to provide some insights into Cambodia´s recent tragic history under the Khmer Rouge with visits to the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng (S-21) Prison. Later visit Wat Phnom to learn how the city got its name and stroll around the boutiques of street 240.

Day 10:

Private transfer to Phnom Penh Airport for your departure flight. Depending on your flight schedule it may be possible to visit the city’s markets.
